Advantages of an Intelligent Lighting System

23 February 2026

This article looks at the various benefits that an intelligent lighting system can offer businesses and homeowners – benefits which are increased if the system uses LED bulbs.

There’s also a rundown of the complimentary services which Doyle Electrical can design and install.

This article is a three-minute read.

Although intelligent lighting systems date back to the early part of the 20th century, it’s only in the last few years that they have really taken off, thanks to the rise in remote devices like mobile phones and tablets. Here, Doyle Electrical, look at the key advantages this type of lighting offers over more traditional systems.

At Doyle Electrical, we supply and install intelligent lighting systems in homes and businesses across Suffolk, including in Eye, Debenham, Framlingham, Ipswich and Martlesham as well as Felixstowe. Call us on 01473 622674 to learn more.

The Remote Control

Intelligent lighting systems can be operated remotely from outside your home or business This means you can have it custom-programmed for when you aren’t there in person.

So if you are working late, you can programme the lighting, both outdoors and indoors, to come on when you arrive home, even if you won’t be getting home at your usual time. There will be no need to fumble with house keys in the dark – which could be the case if you only had a manual programme which had already switched itself off at its usual time.

The Cost Savings

Intelligent lighting can come on only when you really need it. Some systems can automatically adjust themselves, based on the amount of natural light available.

Cutting down on your electricity bills is particularly important in an age of rising utility prices. Most intelligent systems use LED (light emitting diode) bulbs, which also increase your savings. LED bulbs don’t spend so long ‘warming up’, are cheaper to run, and last longer than conventional bulbs.

The Additional Security

Lighting has a proven deterrent value when it comes to discouraging unwanted visitors. You can programme some intelligent systems to turn the lights on and off randomly to make it appear as though someone is home while you are away or out. Other systems can be configured to come on whenever motion is detected, which could discourage potential burglars.

At Doyle Electrical, we can fit plenty of other security features to your home. These include fire detection and alarm systems, and emergency lighting. The latter is important for public and commercial buildings, where you need to have a back-up supply of power.

The Aesthetics

Intelligent systems can also look more stylish than many conventional lights, particularly if LED bulbs form an integral part of the design. It means you can create a real ambience inside or outside your home. This is particularly true in the run-up to Christmas, when you can create a festive feel without buying a tree or decorations.

Integration and Flexibility

Some intelligent systems can be wired to dovetail with other devices in your home, such as blinds or security cameras. And they should be easy to upgrade in line with new floor plans or changing personal circumstances, without the need for any costly rewiring.

FAQS:

Q: When was the intelligent lighting system invented?

A: A primitive system was first used in 1906, in the USA. Stage lanterns using carbon-arc bulbs were operated not by motors or any form of electronics, but by cords that were operated manually to control pan, tilt and zoom.

In the 1920s electrical systems which could also move lights first came on the market; however, it wasn’t until the 1980s and 1990s that the technology really advanced, with bulbs that could change colour and position.

Q: Is an intelligent lighting system cheaper than a conventional lighting system?

A:Although the installation costs may be higher, intelligent systems usually pay for themselves within a few years. This is because they help cut down on wasteful electricity usage, making sure that lights don’t come on when they aren’t needed, and using less electricity even when they are in use.

Q: How long does an intelligent system take to install?

A: If you are talking about a single room or unit, it should only take an hour or two. However, if you were to have smart lighting fitted throughout your home or business, you can expect the work to take one or two days.
